A Quiet 4th of July: Why Slowing Down Matters for Families with Sensory Needs
Some holidays look different, and that’s okay.
Hey family, it’s Michael, back again with a Tuesday message for those of us walking the parenting journey with autism, sensory needs, or unique family rhythms.
This 4th of July looked different, and honestly? That’s exactly what we needed.
No loud BBQs. No crowded parks. No pressure to do what everyone else is doing.
Just us. At home. A quiet dinner, a movie, and later… fireworks through the window.
If you’re raising a child with sensory needs, you know holidays can be overwhelming, for them and for us.
But this year? We chose peace over pressure.
Watching a movie while Christian was standing on the bed, curious and engaged, Amanda curled up on the floor. Eli and I… finally exhaled.
It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t perfect. But it was ours.
When those fireworks lit up the sky outside our window? That was our celebration, simple, safe, still meaningful.
A reminder that not every celebration has to look like everyone else’s.
And if your holidays ever look different, that’s okay. You’re not missing out. You’re building your own rhythm, one that fits your child, your family, and your peace of mind.

Parent Tip of the Week:
Blended families face unique dynamics. Let’s plan for them with care.
When you’re raising a child with disabilities, neurodivergence, or complex medical needs, and you’re part of a blended family, the emotional and financial planning gets even more layered. Questions about guardianship, fairness among siblings, and long-term protection need to be addressed thoughtfully.
I recently shared a carousel on LinkedIn: 5 Key Considerations for Blended Families Navigating Special Needs, to help families like ours think through the complexities, with love, fairness, and protection in mind.

It’s worth a read, and maybe a share with someone who might need it.
